Location

Banja / Albania

Client

Statkraft Renewables Albania shpk

Statkraft is a European leader within the renewable energy sector. It is wholly owned by the Norwegian state and is Norway’s largest tand the Nordic region’s third largest power producer. its core business areas within hydropower, wind power, gas power and district heating, it is expanding into solar power in various places globally, including Albania. It has a total annual power production of 66 TWh with a renewable percentage of 99%.

Within the scope of this project, the feasibility report for Floating Solar PV power plant has been prepared. The project is in Banje village in Cerrik/Albania. With the total 2 MW installed power capacity, Floating Solar PV generating system composed of four pieces of floating platforms.

The pre-feasibility report presents the main subjects with focus on the site assessment, design, solar resource analysis, the energy yield estimation and the uncertainty analysis, technology review, grid connection assessment, financial and economic review and lastly environmental and social terms of the proposed floating Solar PV power plant project.

The 2 MW floating Solar PV power plant was installed on the surface of Devoll Hydro power plant. The total surface area of the HPP reservoir is more than 100 ha. Due to technical reasons, the 2 MW installed capacity is divided in four floating units. The total 2 MW installed capacity is planned to be divided in four pieces as 4 x 500 kW configuration. The basic unit is a 72 m diameter floater with 1824 pieces of 275 W Solar PV Modules for a floater capacity of 500 kW.

The services scope of EnergyWorks included:

  • Project design and design optimization
  • Solar resource analysis
  • The energy yield estimation
  • Uncertainty analysis
  • Technology review
  • Grid connection review and the location of the energy meter
  • Reporting all findings in feasibility report

For Floating Solar PV project, floating membrane technology was considered. The product itself has been tested up to 500 kW installed capacity per membrane unit. Therefore, the project comprised of 4 sets of 500 kW membrane units. The membrane unit capacity is still under development stage and the focus of the manufacturer is to increase the size of the membrane unit above 1 MW installed PV modules capacity.

Upon analysis supplied by EnergyWorks, the owner proceeded with an expanded 2MW scope for the project. EnergyWorks has provided services with the role of owner’s engineer.
